Bidwell - Wood House
Oldest home in Sarasota
The Bidwell-Wood House at 849 Florida Avenue was built in 1882 for Alfred and Mary Bidwell. Mary had purchased the land from the State of Florida for $1 per acre. The house was just completed when Alfred and other neighbors met here to make a plan to kill the Bidwell's neighbor and Sarasota's first Postmaster, Charles E. Albee.
Alfred owned a store in Sarasota 1 1/2 miles away at the bay on a sandy street which is now Cunliff Lane (west off Osprey between Webber and Hillview). Albee was shot December 27th, 1884 in front of Bidwells' store. The investigation revealed a secret society, Sara Sota Vigilance Committee, led by Bidwell. He was convicted and sentenced to death, commuted to life, later released.
This murder ended years of contention between local farmers and groups
of land speculators who, after the Civil War, tried to circumvent the
1862 Homestead Act by terrorizing early settlers. With no organized
system to dispense justice, frontier law ruled.
The house was purchased in 1895 by Annie and Luke Wood as a winter home and occupied by them; then by their daughter Ethel until her death in 1966. The house was moved in 1977 from US41-301 and Wood Street by Historical Society of Sarasota County, Inc., with community assistance.
